Sunnova Solar Systems with Tesla Battery

Sunnova’s Tesla battery solar systems are an energy resilience solution that combines solar panels, batteries, and a central inverter or micro-inverters for energy management, providing a reliable, efficient, and sustainable source of electricity. This type of system not only allows energy to be generated from the sun, but also to optimize its use in the home.

Here’s how it works in detail:

Solar Power Generation

Solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect. Hence the popular term "photovoltaic panels."

The energy generated is in the form of direct current (DC), which must be converted into alternating current (AC) by a central inverter or micro-inverters so that it can be used in your home. This is important as we must understand that the energy that is generated from our solar panels, in most cases, cannot be used in our homes without this conversion. This is why the inverter is a critical piece of our systems and we must protect them.

Direct energy use

The electricity generated by the panels after passing through the inverter or micro inverters is immediately used to power the equipment and appliances in your home.

The system has an energy manager, which works as an intelligent brain that manages energy, it prioritizes sending the energy to your home, then to your Tesla battery and finally, if there is an excess, it sends it to the power grid.

During emergencies or times when there is no power grid, the system will continue to provide power to your home. It is important that you monitor your energy usage during these periods as possible changes will be necessary to avoid running out of charge in your battery.

Battery Energy Storage

If the panels generate more power than you're currently using, the surplus is stored in your battery until it's 100% charged.

The battery is a key piece for your system to be able to operate when there is no power from the power grid. You must not alter, disconnect or make any changes without being in communication with its installer. This, in addition to affecting your warranty, could cause your system to stop working.

Batteries do NOT generate power, they only store energy from their solar panels or the power grid. When there is no power grid, the amount of energy that can be stored depends on how much energy your solar panels are generating and how much energy you are consuming. If you're consuming more power than you're generating, your battery will be draining, that's why we recommend decreasing power consumption when there's no mains.

It's good to ensure that your batteries are always close to 100% charge as this stored energy will be available for use when there's a power outage, during the night and on cloudy days.

During a power outage if you are consuming more energy than you are generating, or it is nighttime, your battery will be running low, we recommend decreasing energy consumption when there is no mains to ensure you have power for longer.

Mains Connection

If at any point your solar panels don't generate enough power (for example, during cloudy days), the system can take electricity from the grid to cover the difference.

If it generates more power than you use and its batteries are full, you can send the excess to the power grid. This allows you to take advantage of Net Metering, reducing your electricity costs.

How does your Tesla system perform in a blackout?

In the event of a power outage, the Tesla Battery Sunnova System uses the battery to keep your home equipment running. If the blackout is during periods of sunshine, it will continue to provide energy to your home; and if the consumption is low, your battery will stay charged. If the blackout is at night, the energy you will receive will be what is stored in your battery, you should keep monitoring your system to know how much energy is left in your battery.

This system is designed to provide power to you during a power outage. You should not connect extension cords to power other homes or connect other equipment that was not contemplated when the installation was made. This will only cause you to run out of power earlier than planned.

Economic Savings

If you combine your solar energy system, with good efficiency and energy saving practices, you can save significantly on your electric bill, since you are enrolled in the net metering program. However, if you increase your electricity use from the grid, you could receive a higher electric bill.
