Generac Solar Systems

Generac solar systems are a solution for energy resilience that combines solar panels, batteries, and a central inverter. This makes it possible to offer a reliable, efficient and sustainable source of electricity. This type of system not only allows energy to be generated from the sun, but also to optimize its use in the home.

Here’s how it works in detail:

Solar Power Generation

Solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect. Hence the popular term "photovoltaic panels." The energy generated is in the form of direct current (DC), which must be converted into alternating current (AC) by a central inverter so that it can be used in your home. It is important as we must understand that the energy that is generated from our solar panels (DC), in most cases, cannot be used in our homes without this conversion. This is why the inverter is a critical piece of our systems and we must protect it.

Direct energy use

In Generac's solar systems in the Solar Access Program, the energy generated by the solar panels first charges the backup battery (usually located near the inverter). Only when the battery is fully charged is the surplus energy directed to power your equipment and eventually to the power grid. The inverter works like an intelligent brain that manages energy, it prioritizes sending the energy to your battery, then to your home and, finally, if there is an excess it sends it to the power grid. During normal days where there is power from the power grid, you will receive power throughout your home and will be able to operate your equipment as usual. During emergencies or times when there is no power grid, the system is likely to provide power only to the critical equipment in your home. This is done by installing a critical load panel that will only power the refrigerator, medical equipment and equipment to ensure their quality of life. This will help maximize your battery's power.

Battery Energy Storage

The battery is another key piece for your system to be able to operate when there is no power from the power grid. The energy generated by your solar panels will prioritize charging your batteries, if there is any surplus it will be used to operate your equipment at home. Batteries do NOT generate power, they only store energy from their solar panels. When there is no power grid, the amount of energy that can be stored depends on how much energy your solar panels are generating and how much energy they are consuming. If you're using more power than you're generating during a power outage, your battery will be draining. We recommend decreasing energy consumption to ensure you have power for longer. It is good to ensure that your batteries are always close to 100% charge as this stored energy will be available in cases of blackouts or interruptions in the electrical system.

Mains Connection

If your batteries are full and more power is generated than you use, you can feed the excess back into the power grid. This allows you to take advantage of net metering, reducing your electricity costs.

How does your Generac system perform in a power outage?

In the event of a power outage, the Generac system uses the battery to keep essential equipment running as specified and discussed in its contract. This backup can be configured to prioritize the most critical devices according to your needs. This means they want to ensure that the appliances that are most important to you have constant power. This system is designed to provide power to you during a power outage. You should not connect extension cords to power other homes or connect other equipment that was not contemplated when the installation was made. This will only cause you to run out of power earlier than planned.
