Each fall Hispanic Federation hosts Night of 1000 Friends, a benefit fundraiser designed to support our work in Latino communities across the United States. This year, on Thursday, November 3rd, HF’s Night of 1000 Friends will benefit our hunger relief initiative, Lucha Contra El Hambre. Launched in 2011 with the help of the Ford Motor Company, Lucha Contra El Hambre provides direct hunger relief to Latino children and families and raises awareness about the growing problem of food insecurity among Latinos.
According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 3.6 million Latinos in the United States are food insecure. Proportionately, Hispanics are more likely to face hunger than are other Americans as a whole. Even more troubling, the percentage of Hispanic households with children that are food insecure is more than twice the percentage for the United States in total.
“Lucha Contra El Hambre is one of our most important programs,” said HF President José Calderón. “We have millions of people in our communities who aren't certain where their next meal will come from. In addition, many of the most vulnerable are children. During the Great Recession we saw Hispanic food insecurity grow and place a significant strain on member agencies that provide relief. We need to support them and that’s why the proceeds from Night of 1000 Friends are used yearly to support hunger relief.”
