Our Health Work
Hispanic Federation has taken a national leadership role in raising awareness of Latino health disparities, promoting strategies to improve Latino health, increasing Latinos’ access to affordable and quality healthcare, and providing supportive grants to nonprofit organizations that address health disparities in communities of color. Our programs include efforts in three key areas: Increasing access to health care, supporting healthy lifestyles, and advocating for health equity.

Ser Saludable: Preventative Healthcare Resources and Programs
Hispanic Federation offers several preventative health and wellness resources and programs under its Ser Saludable initiative that focuses on maintaining healthy lifestyles in the Latino communities by addressing disparities, increasing physical activities, providing access to vaccines, managing chronic diseases to increase overall quality of life, and more. Explore our preventive healthcare resources and initiatives below.
Stop HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, and now it can be managed with the right resources and treatment. HF has resources that can help community members prevent or manage HIV/AIDS effectively.
Healthy Lifestyles
HF works with the community to increase awareness around nutrition and healthy lifestyles through fitness challenges, educational workshops, and physical activity that are offered to all community members at all ages.
Diabetes Prevention
Type 2 diabetes disproportionately affects the Latino community. But there’s hope. With HF’s help, community members can take simple steps to improve their health and prevent the onset of prediabetes.
Cancer Awareness and Education
Hispanic Federation provides cancer education, outreach workshops, and screening tools to help patients with cancer management. Our program also offers referrals for easy access to screenings.
Mental Health in the Latino Community
Mental health is often a stigmatized topic in the Latino community, and yet many are affected by mental health illnesses. In fact, at the height of the pandemic and after, Latinos experienced mental health issues such as greater trauma from losing loved ones and emotional stress from close living situations. Additionally, language barriers and ongoing difficulties accessing expensive healthcare can make it difficult for people to access the care they need. Hispanic Federation has created and compiled resources to help destigmatize mental illness and expand access to mental health resources.
Healthcare Enrollment & Access
Accessing quality, affordable medical care has historically been the biggest challenge for millions of Latinos in the United States. Since 1998, Hispanic Federation (HF) has been helping families enroll in Medicaid and Child Health Plus, making healthcare more accessible for tens of thousands of Latino families.
HF’s role expanded under the Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare). Currently, the Hispanic Federation, along with 4 partner agencies, assists New York families and small businesses in enrolling for health coverage through NY State of Health: The Official Health Plan Marketplace. Navigators are available to help eligible individuals complete the enrollment application
