At the Mar y Sol festival in Volusia County last week, volunteers led by HF’s Director of Florida & Southeast operations, Zoé Colón, helped engage and register hundreds of new voters on an afternoon pulsating and infused with the sounds of Salsa.
Focused in Central Florida along the I-4 Corridor — particularly in Volusia County as well as Osceola and Orange Counties — HF’s voter mobilization campaign is creating an impact in a region with the highest concentration of Puerto Ricans. This is a critical population, because despite their status as citizens on the island, they are unable to vote in the General Election in November without stateside residency. Many of these individuals are in need of mainland registration with their new addresses.
Historically, this has been an important region within the always-crucial swing state of Florida. The Puerto Rican community of Central Florida in particular has the power to yield enormous political power that can determine both national and local races. HF is working hard to make sure Puerto Ricans are empowered to make use of this collective power. And if it’s true that “As Florida goes, so goes the nation,” then we’re there to ensure that it moves to the sounds of Salsa.
