"Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito laid out an unapologetically progressive vision for how New York City can protect and empower all New Yorkers, regardless of race, religion, gender and immigration and economic status,” stated José Calderón, President of the Hispanic Federation. “Her proposals for strengthening the city’s sanctuary policies to protect hard-working undocumented immigrants from federal immigration authorities will serve as a national model for safe spaces from coast to coast. She laid out a clear roadmap for improving our children’s education that included smaller class sizes, comprehensive sexual education and anti-bias trainings. Her plans to offer access to free birth control to all city women regardless of health insurance will empower them to make the best choices for their bodies without economic constraints. Through her compassion, wisdom and persistence, Speaker Mark-Viverito has served and led our great city to new heights and all New Yorkers are better off for it."
