Conference Convenes Experts to Advance Latino Student Academic Opportunity and College Readiness Amid Federal Funding Cuts
New York, NY – Amidst ongoing cuts to federal funding for education and direct efforts to remove Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs Hispanic Federation convened more than 300 educators at the Hispanic Education Summit to delve into the systemic and daily challenges that students face while also developing actionable solutions for school administrators, teachers, students, and elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels. The Hispanic Education Summit is the largest community-wide gathering focused on Latino education in New York City.
Participants tackled a range of critical topics, from the role of Artificial Intelligence in classrooms to strategies for supporting students’ mental health and overall well-being. The Summit also shared updates about the Latinidad Curriculum Initiative – an upcoming, cutting-edge curriculum that New York City teachers, administrators, and community-based organizations can use to incorporate the histories and cultures of Latino communities into existing coursework.
“While our federal government actively works to narrow the pipeline to higher education for communities of color across the nation, educators, advocates, and policymakers are coming together to protect and uphold opportunity for our nation’s youth. The Hispanic Education Summit represents our collective resolve to ensure that our students have the tools, resources, and support they need to achieve one of the most powerful pathways to economic mobility and long-term stability: higher education,” said Jessica Orozco Guttlein, Senior Vice President for Policy and Communications, Hispanic Federation.
The Summit also featured remarks from Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, Chancellor, The City University of New York, Havidán Rodríguez, President, University at Albany, Kamar Samuels, Chancellor of NYC Public Schools, and opening remarks from Doris B. González, Acting President of the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation. The full summit agenda is available here and select event photos can be seen here.
