Hispanic Federation: The SAVE America Act Will Damage Our Democracy and Silence Millions of Eligible Voters
Washington, D.C. – In the past two weeks, Hispanic Federation visited U.S. Senators John Fetterman (D-PA), Rick Scott (R-FL), and several other Senate offices to deliver a clear and urgent message – Congress must reject the SAVE America Act and protect our right to vote. Below is a statement from Julietta Lopez, Vice President for Federal Advocacy and Network Engagement of Hispanic Federation regarding the potential of the SAVE America Act moving forward in Congress:
“The SAVE America act poses a direct threat to America’s free and fair elections – a cornerstone of our democracy. At its core, this bill is exclusionary and tears down centuries of civil rights efforts expanding the constitutional right to vote. At a time when we should be inviting more voters to participate in local and national elections, the SAVE America Act significantly reduces voting opportunities and sends the message that ‘not all voters are valued.’ It is troubling to see some elected officials capitalizing on fabricated and misleading concerns about election integrity to advance this perilous legislation while knowing the harm it would cause, particularly for women and low-income voters.
The SAVE America Act would result in disenfranchising more than 22 million voters. This impacts people across the country, irrespective of party affiliation, but would be felt the most by married women, rural, and low-income voters who don’t have the money or time needed to maintain their right to vote. The cost of obtaining the documents required to be an eligible voter under the SAVE America Act will essentially create a poll tax on voting.
Americans are looking at Congress to produce solutions to real challenges, such as the high cost of living and shrinking health care coverage. Instead, they are working on actively suppressing American’s right to vote months prior to the midterm elections. We call on Congress to reject the SAVE America Act and to stand on the right side of history – alongside the millions of eligible voters who simply want their voices heard.”
