Washington, DC — Yesterday, the Supreme Court handed the White House a narrow and temporary win in their repeated attempts to undermine trust in American elections. Roughly two dozen states have sued the Administration over their expanding efforts to undermine the safety of and access to mail-in ballots. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, responding to the SCOTUS ruling.
“The Administration’s efforts are harmful to our democracy; multiple studies have shown that mail-in voting is a safe and effective tool for expanding ballot access, particularly for elderly Americans and those with disabilities. In March, the government proposed new rules that could stop some registered voters from being able to cast their ballot. Yesterday’s ruling did not decide whether those rules are legal. The Court ruled only on timing, finding that states suing came to court too soon. It did not rule on the merits of the case.
Importantly, a separate injunction against these rules remains in place, blocking them from taking effect. In addition, a new development at the U.S. Postal Service means the same two dozen states may already have ground to refile their lawsuits.
This ruling was reckless in the face of ongoing attacks on elections. While the Administration continues trying to discriminate against voters based on how they choose to cast their ballot, Hispanic Federation remains committed to the nonpartisan mission of connecting every eligible American voter to that most essential of freedoms: the right to vote.”
