Hispanic Federation Denounces ICE Agents Shooting and Killing of Renee Good and Calls for Immediate ICE Oversight
New York, NY – Yesterday video was published that showed Renee Good, US Citizen, being shot and killed by ICE agents after they attempted to stop her vehicle. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation regarding the incident:
“Over the past year, we have witnessed in horror how immigrants and U.S. citizens alike have been terrorized by U.S. law enforcement. Communities across the country, including elected officials, have been subjected to blatant racial profiling, excessive force, and masked agents kidnapping and harassing their families, neighbors, and friends. For months, hundreds of organizations and community leaders warned that the militarization of ICE and the use of excessive force would lead to tragedy. Yesterday, said tragedy struck at the hands of the U.S. government when Renee Good was killed by an ICE agent.
We know that channels of accountability and transparency exist for law enforcement; however, ICE agents have been empowered to violate rights, knowing there won’t be a modicum of accountability.
To make matters worse, the President of the United States is using this tragedy to spread misinformation about the shooting of Ms. Good and further divide our nation. President Trump’s deliberate fabrication of events sets a dangerous precedent where the leader of this country can continue to spread blatant lies when we have – with our own eyes – witnessed an innocent person being killed by actors of the U.S. government.
Hispanic Federation uplifts its call to Congress to take immediate action in oversight, accountability, and reform to ICE operations, both field and administrative protocols. If immediate action is not taken, tragedies like this will not only continue, but will escalate in number and ruthlessness.
We stand with Renee Good and her family in demanding that our democracy stay intact, and that all people of this country remain free to live a life of freedom, peace, safety, and dignity without the fear of being killed by their own government.”
