Hispanic Federation Applauds Supreme Court for Declining to Revisit Marriage Equality Law
New York, NY – Today, the Supreme Court declined a petition by a Kentucky county clerk asking the Justices to take up a case reexamining 2015’s Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage across the country. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, the first openly gay president of the organization:
“Today, millions of Americans – including countless Latino LGBTQ+ individuals and their loved ones – can breathe easier. The Supreme Court’s decision not to revisit marriage equality affirms what we know to be true: all families deserve equal rights, dignity, and recognition under the law. The court is siding with the majority of Americans who more that 69% support marriage equality.
For way too long, our LGBTQ+ population has lived with uncertainty as their fundamental rights have come under attack. While we are relieved the Court declined the petition, we remain vigilant. The same Court has shown it is willing to overturn longstanding precedent, and Justice Clarence Thomas has explicitly called for reconsidering marriage equality.
Hispanic Federation stands firmly with our LGBTQ+ community members in stating that marriage equality is and will continue to the law of the land. Love is love. Families are families. We will never stop fighting to protect the rights and dignity of all people, regardless of who they love or how they identify.”
But securing marriage equality is not the only right that we need to protect. The right to marry is one of many we need to preserve and secure. LGTBQ+ people, especially brown and black, are disproportionally affected and underserved. Our community knows what it means to fight for recognition, for belonging, for the right to build a life without fear. As the first gay president of Hispanic Federation, we promise to continue standing shoulder to shoulder with LGBTQ+ individuals to ensure that full equality becomes the law of the land.
