WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship as the law of the land after President Trump issued an executive order attempting to eliminate key components of the 14th amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees U.S. citizenship to those born in this country. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, about this ruling.
“Our nation was founded on the American Dream and the notion that every individual, through determination and hard work, can have the opportunity to create a more prosperous life for themselves and their families. Today’s Supreme Court decision solidifies birthright citizenship as a constitutional right and fundamental principle of this nation.
The United States of America is a nation of immigrants, and this is how we were established. This principle is the essence of our success as a nation and is enshrined within the 14th Amendment of our constitution, the supreme law of the land.
Through a stroke of a pen, the President demonstrated his willingness to undermine the Constitution by attempting to deprive U.S.-born children of immigrant families of their rights, effectively targeting the very individuals that the Constitution was intended to safeguard. The strength of our nation is largely attributed to the contributions of children of immigrants, and it is our responsibility to remember that.
While today’s ruling has halted this current attempt to abolish the 14th Amendment, we must remain vigilant in opposing any future attempts to eliminate birthright citizenship and urge Congress to enact legislation that further safeguards this constitutional right.”
