STATEMENT FROM HISPANIC FEDERATION PRESIDENT AND CEO FRANKIE MIRANDA ON DHS SECRETARY MAYORKAS IMPEACHMENT

For Immediate Release: February 14, 2024

“Yesterday’s impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas by the Republican majority in the House is a clear example of political retribution and another attempt to distract the American people from their inability to govern.

It is hypocritical for extremist Republicans to try to settle policy differences by trying to oust Mayorkas for supposedly neglecting to secure the southern border while simultaneously refusing to engage in real conversations on how to fix our broken immigration system. Even Senate Republicans have stated that there is no basis for an impeachment and that this is a waste of time with no chances of moving forward in the Senate.

What’s even more alarming is to see Members of Congress resort to racist assumptions about the Latino community to justify their impeachment. Racism and antisemitism have been weaponized this week to justify this bogus impeachment, and it must be called out and stopped.

Once again, we urge Congress to stop playing politics and wasting taxpayers’ money. Our lawmakers should focus on addressing the critical issues that they were elected to solve such as our broken immigration system, the need for affordable housing, inflation, and so much more. In short – in the absence of high crimes and misdemeanors the Senate must dismiss this impeachment and get everyone back to work.”
