HF Officially Opens Its Doors In Florida

When Hispanic Federation was founded, our purpose was clear: support Latino-led community-based organizations in New York City. In the quarter century since, we have expanded not only our scope of work, but our reach. In 2006, we launched a satellite office in Washington D.C. In 2012, we did the same in Connecticut. This June, we opted for a warmer and much-needed home in Florida.

Home to more than 4.5 million individuals representing a quarter of the state’s total population, there is undoubtedly a strong Hispanic presence in Florida. What’s more, while the traditional presence of Cubans in the Sunshine State remains strong, in Orlando we’re seeing a historic migration of Puerto Ricans—the largest since the 1940s. These newly arrived migrants face a set of unique challenges, but they are in many ways tied to Hispanics of different national origins by language and culture.

Hispanic community-based organizations and community leaders are coming together to serve in a culturally competent and culturally sensitive way. As the number of Latino Floridians has multiplied in recent years, so too has the number of challenges facing the community. Unemployment, access to affordable health care, and education are at the forefront of the concerns of Hispanics in the state. We want to bring those organizations to the table, and make sure they have the tools they need to succeed.

Earlier this month, HF officially inaugurated its Florida and Southeast Operations with a reception in Downtown Orlando. The evening was filled with good music, dancing, and conversation. Notable guests included Florida State Senator Darren Soto, District 3 Commissioner Pete Clarke, and Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando President Diana Bolivar, along with many Latino community leaders.

There is much work to be done and we are confident that the Hispanic nonprofits in Florida is well positioned to offer solutions and implement successful program to benefit all Hispanics. We can’t wait to lend them our expertise and support.
