The enrollment period to register for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare came to a close on January 31st. Hispanic Federation was hard at work in the months before the deadline to make sure that Latino families had an opportunity to get the health insurance they needed. On January 28th HF hosted a healthcare insurance enrollment day at LaGuardia Community College in partnership with Telemundo 47. In January alone we enrolled nearly 2,000 individuals in a health insurance plan under Obamacare.

It’s important to remember that if you experience a change in your civil status, employment or even adopt a child, there are exemptions in Obamacare that allow you to still enroll in a health plan and avoid paying a fine. For more information, on these exemptions, please click HERE.

Of course, many families are still without insurance. While the enrollment period for ACA is closed, there are a number of other options available to get covered. In New York State, families can still enroll in Medicaid, Essential Plan, and Child Health Plus. You can sign-up for these programs by telephone, Internet or mail. Hispanic Federation staff are also on available to help you or your family get insurance. If you need to get covered, call HF’s free, bilingual hotline at 866-HF-AYUDA, or (866) 432-9832.
