Hispanic Federation Denounces Stonewall Pride Flag Removal as a Dangerous Attempt to Bury a Critical Part of Our History

New York, NYA rainbow Pride flag was removed from the Stonewall National Monument following a directive outlined in a memo from the U.S. Department of Interior on January 21. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, about this decision:

“The removal of the Pride flag from the Stonewall National Monument in Greenwich Village is a deliberate attempt to erase the history and contributions of LGBTQ+ people, including the countless Latines who were at the forefront of this movement, such as the great Sylvia Rivera.

The Stonewall Riots represented a flash point when our community took a bold stance against discrimination and violence that targeted the LGBTQ+ community throughout history. The flag is a symbol of resistance, resilience, and the sacrifices of those who came before us and must be proudly flown at the Stonewall National Monument.

As the first openly gay president of Hispanic Federation, I know firsthand the importance of visibility and representation. Removing this flag sends a chilling message to LGBTQ+ youth, especially young Latines, that their identities and histories do not matter.

Our community does not back down from intimidation. Our community stood up at Stonewall in 1969, and we will stand up now. We appreciate the groundswell of support from New Yorkers, including elected officials and community members, who are making clear how strong our community is. We know the Pride flag will fly again at the monument because of these unified voices. We are sending a clear message that our history cannot be erased, and we remain committed to fighting for dignity and justice regardless of who may try to say otherwise.”
