Hispanic Federation Denounces Passage of Spending Bill that Cuts Essential Services for Families
Washington D.C. – Today, the U.S. Senate passed H.R.1. This legislation, advanced through the reconciliation process, is riddled with cuts to essential federal programs and services that working class families in the U.S. depend on. In reaction to the passage of H.R. 1, Jessica Orozco Guttlein, Acting Co-President of Hispanic Federation, released the following statement:
“The passage of H.R. 1 underscores just how far extremists in Congress are willing to go to provide tax cuts for wealthy individuals at the expense of working families, senior citizens, and the most vulnerable. This legislation could prove the single largest reduction in vital social programs since World War 2. The negative economic and social impact of this bill will be felt for generations as it deprives more than ten million Americans of access to health care, shuts down rural hospitals, and deprives children of nutrition programs. Through one bill, Congress stands poised to make the American dream only a distant memory.
These and other provisions included in this legislation will have a disproportionate effect on the Latino community. Latinos voted in record numbers in 2024, looking for a government that would prioritize economic stability and affordability. Instead, the White House and Congress are making it their priority to cut critical services, pass policies that increase the cost of living for working families, and tear families apart by building a mass deportation system – at the same time giving tax breaks to the wealthiest families and corporations.
We urge Congress to prioritize what Americans across the country are asking for, affordable housing, accessible health care, and a government they can trust to make decisions for the betterment of their families.”
