Hispanic Federation: Conversion Therapy is Abuse. The Supreme Court Legalized It Anyway

Washington, D.C. The Supreme Court today struck down Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy aimed at LGBTQ+ youth, with the majority claiming that this ban violated the free speech rights of a conservative Christian therapist. Conversion therapy seeks to encourage LGBTQ+ minors to identify as heterosexual and/or the gender assigned to them at birth and has repeatedly been condemned by leading researchers and medical practice groups as dangerous and harmful. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, and the first openly gay leader of this organization.

“Today, on International Trans Visibility Day, the Supreme Court delivered a devastating blow to our children.

“Conversion therapy is abuse; every major medical and psychiatric organization in this country has condemned the practice, which is ineffective and has been found to be tantamount to torture. LGBTQ+ youth subjected to conversion therapy are twice as likely to attempt suicide. States and professional organizations routinely regulate harmful pseudoscientific medical practices without issue – but when the LGBTQ+ community is targeted the Court hastens to dismiss such everyday safeguards.

“Latine LGBTQ+ youth already face too many challenges such as cultural stigma as well as a lack of resources and support. This ruling strips away a layer of protection and opens the door to harm in more than 20 states.

“Hispanic Federation stands firmly with our LGBTQ+ community. We will fight alongside advocates, families, and lawmakers at every level to ensure our children are protected and free to be exactly who they are. Now is when we need political and societal leadership to condemn conversion therapy and use all levers available to make sure that those who advance or support such abhorrent practices are made aware that they cannot continue.”
