Hispanic Federation Condemns Another Killing by Federal Agents and Demands the U.S. Senate Provide Guardrails and Oversight to Department of Homeland Security
Washington, D.C. – Following the killing of another American citizen, Alex Pretti, by federal agents in Minnesota over the weekend, the U.S. Senate plans on voting on the House-passed funding package to further increase funds for the Department of Homeland Security. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation responding to these recent events and calling on the Senate to include meaningful guardrails and oversight for ICE field and administrative actions as a part of any DHS funding packages.
“Weeks after the senseless killing of Renee Good at the hands of ICE, the House passed a funding package for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Days later, federal agents killed another U.S. citizen, Alex Pretti. Now, the Senate is poised to take up the DHS funding bill. If the Senate is to consider passing any additional funding for DHS, it must include guardrails and oversight for all of its agencies – including ICE.
Late last year, Congress appropriated a staggering $170 billion – including $75 billion for ICE alone – for mass deportation and the militarization of ICE. Today, we are witnessing how these dollars are being used – to deploy unrestrained federal agents into communities, threatening public safety, violating constitutional protections, and diverting resources away from programs that could uplift our communities. Additional funding without accountability will result in more people losing their lives.
Hispanic Federation calls on Congress to restore constitutional protections, establish independent oversight, and institute robust guardrails on any DHS funding. Our communities must know that our elected officials are listening to the outcry that is resounding across the nation and that Congress is taking meaningful action to protect people from unfettered and aggressive actions by federal agents.”
