Hispanic Federation Concerned About SCOTUS Decision Opening Doors to Additional Lawsuits Challenging Vote by Mail

Chicago, IL – Today, Hispanic Federation expressed concern following a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court allowing political candidates to challenge state absentee ballot rules. In response, Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, issued the following statement:

“At a moment when voter confidence and participation should be strengthened, this ruling sends a troubling signal. Today’s decision by the Supreme Court opens the door for candidates to launch new legal attacks on elections, including vote by mail, a method used by almost 30% of voters in the 2024 elections.

This decision only puts absentee ballots at risk and creates greater skepticism around the validity of elections. Time and time again, credible investigations and reports have found that mail-in voting is secure, safe, and a critical tool for election accessibility.

We know our democracy works best when participation is expanded, not when access is narrowed. Absentee voting is an essential tool that helps working families, seniors, people with disabilities, caregivers, and first responders make their voices heard. Latino voters disproportionately depend on flexible voting options due to barriers such as language, transportation, and many other structural barriers to the ballot box.

We will continue working alongside our partners and communities to defend the right to vote and to ensure Latino voices are fully heard in the upcoming elections.”
