Hispanic Federation Celebrates Record-Breaking Voter Turnout in New York City Municipal Elections
HF and partners have reached more than 325,000 Latino voters with a powerful Get Out the Vote campaign across the five boroughs
New York, NY – Voter precincts across New York City are officially closed, and early voting reports by the Board of Elections have already indicated that this election has seen the largest number of voters in decades. This record-breaking turnout did not happen spontaneously, it is a result of campaigns engaging with voters and presenting policy solutions that have resonated with voters. For many years now, Hispanic Federation has advocated for campaigns to engage directly with our communities and address our concerns, but time and time again campaigns have missed the mark of engaging voters in a culturally and linguistically competent manner, especially with Latino voters. Today’s election results are a strong indicator that effective Latino engagement is possible and could be a new playbook for campaigns across the nation.
Culturally responsive engagement with relatable policy solutions was a key component of La Voz de Mi Gente, a non-partisan initiative from Hispanic Federation that works with trusted local groups to engage voters. This year the initiative worked with six different community-based organizations to reach out to 325,000 voters in all five boroughs, with communications in Spanish and in English.
La Voz de Mi Gente was also intentional about having meaningful conversations, virtually and in person, about how voting impacts issues that matter most to our communities, such as affordability, representation, and education. Hispanic Federation polling, both this year and last year, clearly indicated that economic concerns are a key motivator for Latino voters.
“We worked with our member and partner agencies to engage Latino voters across all five boroughs and helped our communities be informed and empowered, now candidates must demonstrate how that empowerment can turn into meaningful change. Over the past few months, we have seen a surge in culturally responsive messaging providing policy solutions for the challenges our communities face on a daily basis. Such engagement spurred the record voter turnout being reported tonight,” said Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation. “As we look past election day, elected officials must remember the promises that were made to our communities during the elections and to deliver on those promises. This isn’t just about casting a ballot – it is about building a better future for our neighborhoods and families.”
While we wait for the final turnout results, preliminary results clearly speak for themselves. During the June 2025 NYC municipal primaries, more than 165,000 Latinos voted – shattering previous voter turnout records. With more than 1.1 million registered voters, Latinos are the second-largest electorate in New York City, comprising one out of every five voters in New York City. Turnout among young voters aged 18-29 also surpassed 2021’s total, and more people voted on the last day of early voting this year than during the 2024 presidential election.
