Hispanic Federation Calls on Congress to Implement Immediate Oversight Over ICE In Light of Recent Unconstitutional ICE Policy
Washington, DC – A non-partisan whistleblowers group revealed a memo that directs Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to enter homes without a judicial warrant. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation responding to this news.
“For over 200 years, the Fourth Amendment has required judicial authorization before government agencies may enter our homes, and this Amendment remains a core principle of our society. To this day, this Constitutional protection remains in place so that families are protected in their homes and feel safe in their communities. To be clear, the only way ICE can legally enter a home without consent is with a signed, judicial warrant.
Directing federal agents to enter a home without a judicial warrant is unconstitutional and deeply disturbing. Since issuing this memo last May, ICE took intentional and calculated actions to hide it as it violates the Constitution. This ICE guidance, compounded with the killing of Renee Good, and other recent, dangerous actions by this agency, demonstrates the critical and immediate need for oversight over ICE operations.
Immigration policies must fully comply with our rule of law and the Constitution. Protecting our civil rights is a core obligation of our democracy, and it is incumbent upon Congress to ensure that agencies act in accordance with that law.
Hispanic Federation demands Congress take immediate action in oversight, accountability and reforming ICE operations.”
