Hispanic Federation Applauds House Passage to Reinstate Affordable Care Act Subsidies and Calls on Senate to Swiftly Pass Companion Bill

Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to reinstate the Affordable Care Act subsidies. Senate Majority Leader Thune must decide now if the bill will be taken up by the Senate. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation regarding the legislation:

“Congressional inaction led to the expiration of lifesaving enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies last month. In turn, families’ health insurance premiums skyrocketed – in some cases doubling or tripling – putting in jeopardy millions of Americans’ health insurance coverage. Many Latinos gained health insurance coverage for the first time because of the ACA, which provided historic gains for the community. These subsidies are not a luxury; they are lifesaving.

Yesterday’s House vote to reinstate the enhanced ACA subsidies was a critical and necessary step forward. Hispanic Federation applauds the leadership by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for this vote and Congressional members – both Democrats and Republicans – for making this a bipartisan bill. Now, we urgently call on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to bring this clean, bipartisan bill to the Senate floor for immediate passage.

Without these subsidies, working families, seniors, and small businesses cannot afford basic health insurance. The extension of these subsidies is essential for protecting access to care, strengthening our health care infrastructure, and upholding the fundamental promise that affordable, quality health coverage should be within reach for every American. The Senate must act now and swiftly pass a companion bill.”
