Hispanic Federation Commends Gov. Hochul’s Bold Commitment to Affordability, Health and Public Safety During State of the State Address

New York, N.Y. – Today, Gov. Kathy Hochul issued her state-of-the-state address to New Yorkers. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, about the proposals shared by the governor:

“Hispanic Federation commends Governor Hochul for delivering a State of the State that puts working families front and center – with bold commitments to affordable and available year-round universal childcare through the 2-Care Program, stronger gun safety reforms, and protection of vital healthcare access. This is an important moment for families across New York State, especially Latino communities.

Black and Latino parents are approximately twice as likely as other families to rely on home-based childcare arrangements because safe, affordable, and reliable care is unavailable — limiting their access to stable employment, reducing economic opportunities and constraining workforce participation. The state’s $8 billion investment toward universal childcare—including support for 2-Care, expanded subsidies, and today’s commitment to deliver universal childcare for every family in New York—represents a transformative step for all New York families and communities.

The Governor’s plan to further strengthen New York’s already nation-leading gun safety laws by cracking down on 3D-printed and illegal firearms is both necessary and urgent. Latinos are disproportionately affected by gun violence, and this new legislation strikes at emerging threats. New York aims to close dangerous loopholes by implementing safety standards for 3D printer and gun manufacturers.

We are hopeful to hear about the Governor’s decisive action to protect 1.3 million New Yorkers at risk of losing access to healthcare, especially in light of federal inaction that could result in the loss of healthcare for millions. We also uplift her commitment to ensuring that New York’s immunization standards remain medically informed.

We also commend her commitment to protecting children’s mental health and well-being by setting nation-leading standards for online safety and privacy.

ICE operations are instilling fear and uncertainty across the nation; we applaud Governor Hochul’s proposal to provide a pathway for New Yorkers to seek accountability when their constitutional rights or well-being is endangered by ICE operations. The Trump administration has emboldened ICE agents to disregard the safety of New Yorkers, but today it was made clear that such disregard for community safety will not be allowed in New York. The proposed accountability for ICE agents provides strong protections for all New Yorkers by providing legal recourse for constitutional rights violations.

Governor Hochul’s investment in New York’s manufacturing sector and workforce development comes at a critical time and sets New York on the pathway to expand the availability of good-paying jobs and career pathways. This commitment supports working-class families, strengthens our state’s economy, and helps ensure that more New Yorkers can achieve financial stability and opportunity.

Hispanic Federation stands ready to partner with Governor Hochul and state leaders to ensure these commitments deliver tangible change for Latino families across New York.
