300 Educators, Community Leaders, and Elected Officials Gathered to Address Education Equity for Latino Students in NYC

Hispanic Education Summit has gathered leaders for over 20 years and this year it included discussions about the Latinidad Curriculum Initiative

New York, NY – With less than two weeks left in the school-year, Hispanic Education Summit convened leaders from across New York State to discuss ways to overcome financial barriers and systemic inequities that exist in Latino academic success. The Hispanic Education Summit featured remarks leaders such as:

  • NYS Attorney General Letitia James
  • New York State Senator and Chair of Committee on Education Shelley B. Mayer
  • NYC Department of Education Chancellor Melissa Aviles Ramos
  • New York City Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez
  • NYC Council Member and Chair of the Committee on Education Rita Joseph
  • Majority Leader and New York City Council Member Amanda Farias

In addition, the summit included a preview of the Latinidad Curriculum Initiative, a cutting-edge curriculum that New York City teachers, administrators, and community-based organizations will be able to use to elevate the stories of underrepresented Latino histories and cultures in existing practices and programs. The Latinidad Curriculum Initiative is funded by the New York City Council and involves Hispanic Federation, United Way of New York City, and The Edmund W. Gordon Institute for Advanced Study at Teachers College, Columbia University.

“Students in New York City are the future, and when more than 40% of the student body is Latino, investing in culturally responsive approaches that can resonate with students today isn’t just an important thing to do, it is a requirement,” said Perla Rodríguez,

Senior Director for Education Programs. “I am thankful to the 300 education leaders who joined us to strategize on how we can improve Latino student academic success, and I am excited to see how we can continue to work together to leverage data and our stories to more effectively build towards a positive future.”
