Hispanic Federation President and CEO Frankie Miranda released the following statement regarding the passage of New York City ballot measures that would create a values-centered preamble, establish a new Office of Racial Equity, appoint a Chief Equity Officer and require the city to measure the true cost of living:

“Communities across the five boroughs have spoken, and they resoundingly voted to create a fairer and more equitable city. COVID-19 laid bare decades of inequities that plague our city. Latino and Black communities were at the frontlines of the pandemic and faced higher death and infection rates from the virus. Our communities were also more likely to lose their jobs and are still reeling from the effects of the pandemic. That is why it is more important than ever to ensure our government prioritizes equity as we chart our city’s recovery. These ballot initiatives are going to hold our elected leaders accountable and give them the tools they need to improve daily life for communities that have been long overlooked by city policy. I join New Yorkers in celebrating their passage, and look forward to working with our partners in city government to create a fair, equitable, and just city.”
