Hispanic Federation President and CEO Frankie Miranda issued the following statement regarding the final passage of the Respect for Marriage Act:

“On behalf of Hispanic Federation, I applaud Congress’ bipartisan action to pass the Respect for Marriage Act. As we saw with Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court has shown a willingness to overturn decades of precedent and protections that are widely supported by the public. Like many in this country, my husband and I can finally breathe a sigh of relief knowing that our marriage will always be protected and recognized under federal law.

My husband and I were separated for more than 10 years because this country refused to recognize our relationship. Since 2013, U.S. v. Windsor and 2015’s Obergefell v. Hodges provided me and my husband - as well as hundreds of thousands of others – some respite and equality in the eyes of our nation. Now, the Respect for Marriage Act will reaffirm these protections and ensure equality for same-sex married couples so that others will not have to go through that same confusion and heartache. We thank Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senators Tammy Baldwin, Susan Collins, and Rob Portman, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and New York Rep. Jerry Nadler, and all LGBTQ+ advocates for their leadership and bringing us this far. We look forward to seeing President Biden sign this bill to enshrine protections for same-sex couples into law.”
