LA VOZ DE MI GENTE: HISPANIC VOTERS ENGAGED BY HISPANIC FEDERATION VOTED AT DOUBLE THE RATE OF OVERALL HISPANIC VOTER TURNOUT

NEW YORK---On Monday, June 19, 2023, GoVoteNYC released a report evaluating community approaches to increase civic engagement and voter turnout in New York City. Among other findings, the report found that Hispanic voters engaged by Hispanic Federation voted at double the rate of overall Hispanic voter turnout. “New Yorkers and voters across the country are hungry for information, and for three decades, Hispanic Federation has been meeting communities where they are with culturally and linguistically competent information that has improved their daily lives, transformed outcomes, increased civic engagement, and accomplished so much more. GoVoteNYC’s report shows that Hispanic Federation is making a significant impact in New York City, and we know that this work is making a difference in several other states too where we have robust, nonpartisan civic engagement efforts that are centered around empowering local communities.

“Our work is far from over. We’re going to continue serving as a trusted organization across the five boroughs and throughout the nation to help communities understand and engage with every aspect of our democracy. In many states, politicians are trying to make it harder for Black and Latino communities to vote – but we won’t let them. Our work will push back on their attempts and empower even more Latinos to vote. We urge everyone to get involved and encourage even more funders to step up and support efforts that protect and strengthen everyone’s right to vote, no matter their race, ethnicity, or zip code. Since 2016, Hispanic Federation has registered more than 160,000 Latino voters across the United States. In 2022, the Federation formally launched La Voz de Mi Gente, a culturally and linguistically competent campaign which seeks to register, mobilize, and empower Latino voters throughout the nation.

• Hispanic voters engaged by Hispanic Federation voted at doubled the rate of overall Hispanic voter turnout.
  
  
• Sixty-one percent of people contacted by Hispanic Federation had not voted in the last three primaries.
  
  
• PSAs were made available to all GoVoteNYC nonprofit partners and other organizations doing GOTV work through the Voting PSA Clearinghouse—a free, open-source toolkit co-created with Hispanic Federation.
  
  
• Culturally competent outreach and voter engagement is essential if organizations want to increase turnout in BIPOC communities. Hispanic Federation’s work in other issue areas builds trust in the Latino community, that trust is one of the biggest reasons Hispanic Federation turns Latinos out to vote.
  
  
• Continuous engagement matters. However, that can only be achieved if Hispanic Federation receives funding every single year. The current model of only receiving funding during election years makes it difficult to engage with voters year-round.
