Following the latest mass shooting in Lewiston, ME, President and CEO Frankie Miranda issued the following statement:

“When is enough, enough? Last night, Lewiston, Maine joined an ever-growing list of U.S. cities whose community is forever changed by another mass shooting.

2023 isn’t even over, and we’ve already experienced more than 566 mass shootings and over 15,500 gun deaths. While we once again reflect on the senseless loss of life and mourn the victims in Maine, we must acknowledge that this tragedy could have been prevented by finally implementing common-sense gun control measures.

On a typical Wednesday night, while families were enjoying a night out, two venues were the scenes of senseless deaths from a high-powered assault style weapon. In the face of this violence, we are once again calling for a unified approach to end mass shootings, which means Congress must finally stand up to the gun lobby and pass comprehensive gun reform at the federal level.

Now is not the time to try to come up with alternative explanations for this horrendous loss of life. Now is the time for solutions. Six-in-ten U.S. adults say gun violence is a very big problem in the country and over 60% of Americans agree that it’s too easy to legally obtain a gun in the U.S. We need leadership on the federal level to listen to the will of the people and pass new gun reform laws now.

As we wait for Congress to act, Hispanic Federation will continue to fight alongside local leaders, community members, and advocates to end the gun epidemic and protect our communities for the next generation.”
