Hispanic Federation President and CEO Frankie Miranda issued the following statement regarding President Biden’s signing of the Respect for Marriage Act:

“As the first gay president and CEO of Hispanic Federation, I commend President Biden for quickly signing the Respect for Marriage Act into law as well as Congress’ decisive and bipartisan action.

Since the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade, the LGBTQ+ community has been thrust into a life of uncertainty as the highest court in our country considers unraveling marriage equality. Not only would this rollback precedent, but it also goes against the will of most Americans who support same-sex marriage, including 83 percent of Latino Catholics. Now, Congress and President Biden have reaffirmed their commitment to the LGBTQ+ community by creating federal protections for hundreds of thousands of same-sex married couples.

These are the types of legislative actions we need to combat hate and normalize love in all its forms. We thank President Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senators Tammy Baldwin, Susan Collins, and Rob Portman, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, New York Representative Jerry Nadler, and all LGBTQ+ advocates for their leadership. Now it’s time to start working on the Equality Act to ensure that LGBTQ+ communities can love who they love without fear of discrimination.”
