According to reports from CBS News and others, the White House indicated to congressional lawmakers that it would be willing to support anti-immigrant provisions that would result in more migrants being denied entry into the U.S. to convince Republicans to approve foreign aid. In response, Hispanic Federation President and CEO Frankie Miranda issued the following statement:

“If reports are true, the willingness of the White House to sacrifice crucial migrant protection policies at the southern border to pass a foreign aid package is unacceptable. Hispanic Federation urges both the Biden Administration and Senate Democrats to stay true to the founding principles of this country and oppose these Republican-backed anti-immigrant proposals. They are nothing more than a political stunt that will ultimately cost the lives of vulnerable migrants seeking to escape violence and civil strife. The Senate should instead focus on streamlining the asylum process and providing support to organizations that are on the frontlines supporting our new neighbors. At the same time, Congress must provide foreign aid without using asylum seekers as political pawns.”
