Statement on Shootings Across the Country

NATIONAL – Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, issued the below statement following the news of shootings in Buffalo, NY and Laguna Woods, Calif. over the past weekend:

“We are outraged by the hate crimes and mass shootings that have targeted people of color and are extremely disheartened by legislators’ inaction that has led to these senseless attacks. We still hold fresh the memory of the shootings in El Paso and the massacre at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, and are once again forced to see a wave of hate-fueled gun violence that leaves families grieving and communities traumatized.

We join the nation in mourning the victims of these tragic shootings. We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims, and stand in solidarity with Black, API, and all communities who have been left reeling from these brutal attacks. We should be free to gather in places of worship, patronize businesses, and go grocery shopping, without fearing that we will be targeted for hate crimes and violence because of the color of our skin, where we were born, our religion, our gender identity or who we chose to love. There is no room for hate and racism in this country, and we stand united with communities of color in calling for lawmakers to finally take swift action so this doesn’t happen again. We urge legislators to pass gun control and other legislation to prevent domestic terrorism fueled by hate groups. The lives of our communities and the future of our country depend on it.”
