On Thursday, June 8, the United States Supreme Court ruled against racial gerrymandering, an unfair and racist practice that dilutes the voting power and representation of Black communities in Alabama. In response, Hispanic Federation President and CEO Frankie Miranda released the following statement:

“Our democracy will only be at its strongest when the democratic principle of “one person, one vote” is protected for everyone – regardless of your race, gender, religion, or zip code. The right to vote and fair representation are the cornerstones of our democracy and ensure that everyone's voices are heard. In 2022, Alabama attempted to weaken our democracy with racist and partisan policies that diluted Congressional representation of its Black communities. Voters in Alabama, the NAACP, and so many others refused to accept this, fought back, and delivered a significant win for communities of color across the country. Today’s Supreme Court ruling further protects the Voting Rights Act and is a warning to other states that are actively creating barriers for Black and Latino voters. We will not stand for policies that attack our right to vote, and we will continue fighting until everyone is able to fully participate in our democracy. We applaud the Supreme Court, the NAACP, and Alabama voters for protecting the representation of our communities and our right to vote.”

Since 2016, Hispanic Federation has registered more than 160,000 Latino voters across the United States. In 2021, the Federation formally launched La Voz de Mi Gente, a culturally and linguistically competent campaign which seeks to register, mobilize, and empower Latino voters throughout the nation.
