Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation issued the following statement:

“We are 24 days into 2023, and we have already seen 39 mass shootings and 1,214 gun deaths. In other words, there have been more mass shootings than the number of days in this new year, and each and every one of these tragedies could have been prevented by common-sense gun control measures.

“Just this week in California, a state that has passed some of the strictest laws to rein in gun violence, we saw senseless deaths in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay. As we stand and mourn with our Asian American brothers and sisters and all communities who have experienced these losses, it’s clear that states and cities cannot combat this violence on their own. We need a unified approach to end mass shootings, which means passing real gun reform at the federal level. We also need leadership at the federal level to address the rise in misinformation and amplification of hate, which fuels gun violence across lines of difference.

“While more states should continue to do their part to end gun violence, we urgently need Congress to stand up to the gun lobby so we can start saving lives and protect our communities for the next generation.”
