DACA Day of Action Touches the Lives of Hundreds PDF Print E-mail

After an intensive two-week long campaign to inform our community about the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, Telemundo 47 and Hispanic Federation held a tri-state DACA Day of Action on October 11th to help eligible DREAMers apply and work to secure temporary relief from deportation and two-year work permits. Under the banner of "DACA: ¡Decídete, Actúa, Consíguela, Ahora!" (Decide, Act, Get It, Now!), our multi-platform public awareness campaign highlighted the stories of several hard-working and inspirational DREAMers on Noticiero Telemundo 47, Acesso Total and Enfoque. These DREAMers, which had previously obtained DACA status thanks to the support provided by the Federation and its member organizations, were also highlighted in several El Diario La Prensa columns. HF’s Linea Informativa hotline received over 1,000 DACA-related calls as a result of this campaign.

2014 National Latino AIDS Awareness Day PDF Print E-mail

On October 15th, Latino health leaders from across the country joined hands to commemorate National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD).  Created by the Latino Commission on AIDS and Hispanic Federation in 2003, this special day of action has grown to become a focus of HIV prevention activities targeting hundreds of Latino communities across the country. It's impact has been deeply felt: Thousands of Latinos tested for HIV and hundreds of thousands more educated on HIV prevention, treatment and care. Equally important, NLAAD has given rise to an incredible network of Latino HIV advocates committed to creating a future without AIDS.

The end of AIDS! This continues to be the focus of NLAAD and the work of our Latinos Unidos Contra el SIDA (LUCES) coalition. New York has already committed to developing a plan to end AIDS by 2020. We look forward to using this model of leadership to advocate for similar goals throughout the United States and its territories.

Join the movement! Visit www.NLAAD.org to see how you can get involved. For more information on LUCES, please contact Bethsy Morales, Hispanic Federation's Health Advocacy Manager.

LatinasRepresent New York City Empowerment Luncheon PDF Print E-mail

Latinas are one of the fastest-growing populations in the United States, totaling more than 25 million strong. Yet, out of the more than 8,000 seats in state and national political office, only a little more than 100 Latinas serve in elected office – representing about 1% of political leaders nationwide. That’s unacceptable and clearly needs to change.

LatinasRepresent, a joint initiative of Political Parity and the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, is an agent for change that the Federation fully embraces and supports.

On Wednesday, October 15, 2014, please join Hispanic Federation, National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) and Political Parity for the LatinasRepresent New York City Empowerment Luncheon, where participants will hear from inspiring Latina elected officials and a panel of women professionals on how we can change the political landscape and elect many more Latina leaders.
