HF Commemorate NLAAD at Repertorio Español In observance of National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD), the Hispanic Federation hosted a free theater performance at Repertorio Español for more than 100 Latino New Yorkers. Chosen for its anti-homophobic message, Indiosyncrasy tells the emotional journey of Nene who, raised with a “machista” cultural ideology, is faced with repressed facets of his identity. Nene is struggling to find himself in a world that wants him to be one thing or another. He’s trying to be a good husband and father, but is also exploring his bisexuality. In a desperate attempt to understand himself, he leaves his wife and two children and falls into drug addiction. Indiosyncrasy underlines the emotional battle of homophobia, stereotypes, heterosexism, and loss.

HF and Univision Team-Up in a College Prep Community Forum For Latino families – many of which don’t count on a college family track record and face language barriers - the college preparation experience can be quite daunting. The Federation is working in multiple ways to address this ongoing concern. One of the more exciting initiatives is Univision’s educational campaign, Es el Momento, which the Federation continues to actively support.
On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, the Federation worked with Univision and The City University of New York (CUNY) to present a College Prep Community Forum for Latino parents at Gregorio Luperon High School in Washington Heights, NYC. Over 200 Latino parents attended and were trained on how to support their children’s college readiness and were provided with the resources needed to simplify the college admissions and financing process. Both students and parents left inspired to make higher education part of their lives journey. Through this and other initiatives we hope to significantly increase the number of Latino students who enroll and graduate from college.

"Liderazgo Latino" Spices Up Connecticut!
There is a reason half-a-million Latinos enjoy calling “The Nutmeg State” home. It is after all a state full of spice and savory seasoning, and that was clearly on display when the Federation’s board dating initiative hit the Shubert Theater in New Haven, Connecticut on Thursday, October 13th. Under the banner of Liderazgo Latino, the Federation partnered with Wells Fargo to bring together over 100 business professionals and Latino nonprofits to network and “speed date” with the goal of developing fulfilling and lasting leadership relationships between individuals in the private sector and social service institutions. The excitement was contagious as the board dating kicked off rapid-fire two minute exchanges between participating corporate professionals and nonprofit executive directors. See pictures on
