The most recent data from the Centers’ for Disease Control (CDC) shows that over 200,000 Hispanics/Latinos have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.  Sadly, many of those infected continue to learn of their HIV status later in the disease process, missing critical opportunities to receive early access to an array of life enhancing health and social support services.  Stigma, insufficient access to care and a general lack of HIV knowledge are major contributing factors to the spread of the epidemic in our communities.  

In response to this grave challenge, Hispanic Federation, Latino Commission on AIDS, and the NYS AIDS Institute created Latino HIV Testing Month (LHTM). LHTM is a campaign that seeks to:

• Increase Latino HIV testing in New York State
• De-stigmatize AIDS and HIV testing in Latino communities
• Draw attention to HIV/AIDS among Latinos as a statewide issue

During the month of July, LUCES agencies, community partners, and local leaders will be conducting HIV testing activities throughout NYC’s five boroughs, as well as in areas of Long Island, Westchester, Amsterdam, Peekskill, and Buffalo.  If you would like to get involved or find out where there is an activity taking place near you, please visit www.latinohivtesting.org.
