As a voter, you have the right to…

  • Choose anyone to assist you in voting with the exception of your employer or union representative
  • Vote even if your name is not on the voter list by paper affidavit ballot
  • Vote without re-registering if you have moved within NYC by going to the polling site with your new address and requesting a paper affidavit ballot
  • Request language assistance
  • Vote by emergency paper ballot if the voting machine is broken

To register you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be 18 years old by December 31st of the year in which you file this form (Note: You must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or other election in which you want to vote)
  • Live at your present address for at least 30 days before an election
  • Not be in jail or on parole for a felony conviction
  • Not claim the right to vote elsewhere

Other important information:

  • You are entitled to vote as long as you are in line by the time the polls are scheduled to close (closing time may vary by state).
  • Each voter has 3 minutes to cast his or her vote
  • You may take any information into the polls with you; however, you may not solicit votes within 100 ft of the poll site entrance
  • All poll workers are required to wear an ID badge
  • All new voters who register by mail are required to present current and valid photo identification; or a utility, bank statement, government check, pay check, or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter.
