Letter to Congress asking access to CARES Act education funds for Puerto Rico

Hispanic Federation was joined by over 40 organizations asking that Congress mandate that the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, Betsy DeVos, immediately comply with the CARES Act provision to respond to the education emergency created by Covid-19 and provide Puerto Rico access to the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER Fund), and to the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER Fund), created and funded by Congress on March 27, 2020.

Letter Opposing Indefinite Suspension of Protections for Asylum Seekers and Unaccompanied Children

Hispanic Federation proudly joined Human Rights First, Center for Gender & Refugee Studies, Center for Victims of Torture, International Refugee Assistance Project, Latin America Working Group, Women's Refugee Commission, Young Center for immigrant Children's Rights, and over 240 additional organizations in a letter to Department of Homeland Security and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention opposing the indefinite suspension of protections for asylum seekers and unaccompanied children under the May 19, 2020 order. The order to extend the border shut down indefinitely by exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic has led to thousands of asylum seekers and children to be turned around and denied screenings.

Nondiscrimination in Health and Health Education Programs and Activities

Hispanic Federation joins The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, along with 270+ other organizations, in issuing a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services, to the Office of Management and Budget, OIRA, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in opposition of Health and Human Services proposed final rule. The proposed rule would roll back Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, which protects against discrimination.

231 Groups Oppose Major Business Tax Breaks in CARES Act

Americans for Tax Fairness is joined by Hispanic Federation and 229 other organizations in a letter to Congress opposing two costly tax hand-outs to wealthy business owners and corporations included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act and to urge for the repeal of these provisions.

Inclusion of Provisions of The Improving Social Determinants of Health Act of 2020

Trust for America's Health is joined by Hispanic Federation and 70 organization in urging Congress to include The Improving Social Determinants of Health Act of 2020 (H.R. 6561) in any further iterations of legislation to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill was introduced by Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44) and would authorize the CDC to create a program to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequities, as well as improve the capacity of public health agencies and community organizations.

Department of Justice Must Open a Full and Thorough Investigation into the Murder of Ahmaud Arbery

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights along with Hispanic Federation and 114 additional organizations called on the U.S. Department of Justice to open a full and thorough hate crime investigation into the horrific killing of Ahmaud Arbery. The murder of Ahmaud Arbery and actions of the local police department and district attorneys calls for DOJ to conduct a federal civil rights patter or practice investigation for systemic constitutional abuses.

2020 Census COVID-19 Plans Can't Keep Communities Undercounted

The Leadership Conference Education Fund and the Census Counts campaign are joined by Hispanic Federation and 140 other organizations in a letter to Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Reform urging for the close examination of the Census Bureau's adjusted operational timeline. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the successful completion of the 2020 Census, so enhancements to address the disruptions must be put in place.

Hispanic Federation Supports the Great American Outdoors Act

Hispanic Federation is proud to join the National Trust for Historic Preservation and over 850 organizations in support of the passage of the Great American Outdoors Act (S. 3422) introduced by Senator Gardner (R-CO), Senator Manchin (D-WV), Senator Daines (R-MT), and Senator Warner (D-VA). If enacted, the legislation would establish a National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund, protect historic assets and fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which saves historic, cultural, and natural landscapes for the benefit of all Americans.

HF Applauds the Introduction of The Improving Social Determinants of Health Act of 2020 by Representative Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44)

Hispanic Federation joins almost 160 national and state or local organizations in supporting the Improving Social Determinants of Health Act of 2020 (H.R. 6561), introduced by Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44). If enacted, the bill would create a program at the Center for Disease Control to focus on the Social Determinants of Health. It would include grants to states for a public health approach to SDOH.

Congress Must Ensure Equal Educational Opportunity During COVID-19 Pandemic

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is joined by Hispanic Federation and 60 other organizations in urging Congress to take immediate and comprehensive action to ensure equal educational opportunity during the COVID-19 public health crisis and beyond. Long term closures of early childhood settings, K12 schools, and college campuses, necessary to protect the safety and health of communities, have significantly exacerbated longstanding inequities in our educational system. Leadership and action from Congress can, and must, minimize the harm to marginalized students as long as COVID-19 continues to threaten the public health.
